Physical GTA 6: the box comes with a code, not a disc

The physical edition of GTA VI does not include a disc. What is really inside the box, what it means for resale and downloading, and what Rockstar has said.

If you’re thinking about buying GTA VI in a store expecting a disc, you should know this first: the box comes with a download code.

It’s not a rumor. It was confirmed when pre-orders opened on June 25, 2026, and it has generated a lot of noise since then.

What’s inside the box

An alphanumeric code that you redeem on the PlayStation Store or the Xbox Store, and that downloads the full game for you. Nothing more. There is no disc, no partial installation from physical media.

In practice, buying the “physical” edition is equivalent to buying the digital one with an intermediate step: you go to the store, pay, and at home you enter the code.

What Rockstar has said

Rockstar sources cited by The Hollywood Reporter noted that currently there are no plans to print discs for GTA VI, not for the launch nor for later editions.

That is to say, it is not a temporary decision pending a collector’s edition with a disc. For now, the disc is not planned at any point.

What this implies in practice

You can’t resell it

Once you redeem the code, the game is linked to your account. There is no second-hand market, you can’t lend it to a friend or sell it when you get tired of it.

With GTA V, disc resale was a real part of the game’s life cycle. Here it disappears.

It takes up the same space and takes the same time

You are going to download the entire game just as if you bought it digitally. The box doesn’t save you a single byte or a single minute. Pre-loading is available starting November 12 for everyone.

It still has an advantage: the price

It is the only real reason to buy it in a store. Amazon, MediaMarkt, or GAME can drop below the official €79.99 during campaigns, while Sony and Microsoft’s digital stores rarely discount a Rockstar release.

If you don’t care about the format and just want to pay less, there is the margin.

And another: gifting it

A physical box is still a tangible gift. A code on the PS Store, not so much.

Is this something new in the industry?

Not entirely. More and more releases use the code-in-box format, especially on Xbox. What is striking in this case is the scale: GTA VI is probably the biggest launch in video game history and it is not going to have a disc edition.

For many people who collect physical editions of the saga, this is the first numbered GTA that they won’t be able to put on the shelf with the game inside.

So, where to buy it?

If you don’t care about the format, buy it where it’s cheapest and buy before November 20 to keep the Vintage Vice City Pack.

If you wanted the disc, there is no option. And if you were looking for the physical copy to resell it later, that path is closed.
