One of the most repeated questions by the gaming community since the release of the first official trailer is blunt: will Grand Theft Auto VI come out on PlayStation 4 or PS4 Pro?
Rockstar Games’ official answer is definitive: No. GTA 6 will not come out on PS4, nor on PS4 Pro, nor on Xbox One.
The launch set for November 19, 2026 will be exclusive to the current generation of hardware: PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. If you still play on PS4 and want to explore the state of Leonida and the streets of Vice City on release day, you will need to upgrade your platform.
Why it is technically impossible for GTA 6 to run on PS4
Unlike what happened with GTA V in 2013 (which was designed for PS3 and Xbox 360 and then remastered), GTA VI has been conceived from its first day of development to squeeze the architecture of current consoles.
There are two bottlenecks that make it unfeasible to run the game on 2013 hardware:
1. The drive transfer speed (HDD vs. NVMe SSD)
- PlayStation 4: Uses a traditional SATA II mechanical hard drive with an average read rate of barely 80 - 100 MB/s.
- PlayStation 5: Incorporates a custom PCIe 4.0 NVMe solid state drive with a read speed of 5,500 MB/s (more than 50 times faster).
The Leonida map features an unprecedented density of buildings with explorable interiors, dense vegetation, and high-speed vehicles. On a PS4, driving at 200 km/h down Ocean Drive would cause buildings and textures not to load in time, causing invisible collisions and constant freezing pauses.
2. The processor architecture (Jaguar vs. Zen 2)
The PS4 CPU (low-power 8-core 1.6 GHz AMD Jaguar for laptops from over a decade ago) lacks the computational capacity to manage:
- Hundreds of simultaneous NPCs with independent artificial intelligence routines.
- Advanced volumetric physics of water in the Grassrivers swamps and ocean swells.
- Dynamic simulation of traffic, collisions, and bodywork deformation in real time.
Forcing Rockstar to adapt GTA 6 to PS4 would have required drastically cutting down the map size, pedestrian density, and core mechanics of Jason and Lucia’s story.

Summary: Will there be GTA 6 for PS4?
One of the most frequently asked questions globally (even searched as GTA VI para PS4 or GTA 6 en PS4 in Spanish markets) is whether the game will hit old-gen. The technical answer is no: Rockstar’s graphics engine is designed exclusively for the new generation. Playing GTA 6 para play 4 or its English equivalent is impossible due to the immense CPU and hard drive limitations of the older console, which could not process the NPC density and ray tracing of Leonida.
