GTA 6 will not have microtransactions in the campaign: what it means

Rockstar has confirmed that the single-player campaign of GTA VI will not include microtransactions. We explain exactly what that confirmation covers and what falls outside of it.

Rockstar Games has confirmed that the single-player campaign of Grand Theft Auto VI will not include microtransactions. It is one of the most relevant clarifications regarding the game’s business model, and it’s important to properly understand exactly what it covers.

What has been confirmed

The confirmation refers to the story mode: the campaign starring Jason and Lucia launching on November 19, 2026. In it, there will be no in-game purchases.

In practice, this means that:

  • In-game money is earned by playing. There will be no money packs purchasable with real money within the campaign.
  • Progress is not sped up by paying. What you achieve will be through advancing in the story and in activities.
  • What you pay is what you play. The €79.99 for the standard edition or the €99.99 for the Ultimate cover the full campaign experience.

Why it matters

It might seem obvious, but it is not in the context of this specific franchise.

GTA Online has been one of the most profitable products in the sector for over a decade precisely because of microtransactions: virtual currency cards are a pillar of its economy. With that precedent, it was reasonable to wonder if the model would also carry over to the story mode.

Rockstar’s response clearly separates the two: the campaign is a closed product that is purchased once.

What this confirmation does NOT cover

Here it is important to be precise, because this is where misunderstandings arise:

The multiplayer component is left out. GTA VI launches as a strictly single-player experience. The successor to GTA Online has no announced date —Rockstar has said it will not talk about the subject anytime soon— and its monetization model has not been detailed. It would be a mistake to assume that the absence of microtransactions in the campaign will extend to the online mode.

GTA+ still exists. Rockstar’s subscription service is not disappearing. Digital purchases prior to November 20, 2026, include a free month, and that subscription becomes paid when the gift period ends. It is not a microtransaction within the campaign, but it is a recurring expense associated with the ecosystem.

The editions still have content differences. The Ultimate edition adds vehicles, weapons, and establishments that are not in the standard one, with a €20 upgrade. That is a difference in purchase price, not a microtransaction, but it similarly affects what you end up paying.

What it means for your wallet

If you buy GTA VI to play the story:

ConceptCost
Standard Edition€79.99
Ultimate Edition€99.99
Upgrade Standard → Ultimate€20
Microtransactions in campaign€0
GTA+ (optional, after the free month)Paid subscription

The expense is capped and you know it in advance. This is more than can be said for many launches of comparable scale.

We will update this article if Rockstar details the monetization model for the future online component.
